The position

The Technical Director reports to the Operations Manager, Sea Trucks Group. The Technical Director has a cooperative relationship with the HSE Manager, Fleet Manager, and all technical crew. The Technical Director may direct any member in his division.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Responsible for the efficient organisation of the Technical Department
  • Effective management of all staff (at sea and ashore) to execute their activities in a professional and timely manner in accordance with the STG SMS 
  • Cooperate closely with Marine Operations in assuring the most efficient and economical fleet maintenance, within approved budget limits and with respect to safety, standards and environmental policies 
  • Act as one of the vessels main technical points of contact in the event of an emergency, being available to be contacted at any time, being in direct and continuous contact with Marine Operations as required
  • Plan and coordinate all technical operations and maintenance in a manner that over comes challenges, meet schedules and ensures completion within cost, quality, time and safety constraints
  • Supervise all activities required to preparing, verifying and reporting information in respect to planned maintenance as well as emergency or out of ordinary events (i.e. dry-docking, modifications, warranties, damages, etc)
  • Responsible for technical development projects and preparation and implementation of special projects 
  • Responsible for implementation of company policies and compliance with the same
  • Active involvement in structuring, implementing, and monitoring of the Company SMS within the area of assigned responsibilities
  • Responsible for working within the provisions and guidelines of the Quality Assurance system in compliance with ISO 9001.
  • Responsible for personal safety and for ensuring work is undertaken using safe working practices.
  • Undertaking work in accordance with company HSE procedures.
  • Other duties as directed by Sea Trucks line management from time to time

Key Performance Indicators

  • The ability to effectively manage the Technical Division and maintain high staff retention
  • Able to communicate effectively and articulately at all levels
  • Short and long term planning of maintenance activities ensuring
  • Demonstrate excellent management of technical issues especially vessel availability for DP operations
  • Understanding, implementation and compliance with all applicable international Rules, Regulations, Legislation, Codes, Guidelines, Standards and Specifications
  • Total commitment to, and leadership of, the STG SMS
  • Identification and implementation of continuous improvement opportunities for the SMS

HSEQ Roles and Responsibilities 

  • Lead by example in demonstrating the correct behavior in implementing all HSE programs
  • Recognise the ‘ownership' of health, safety and environmental control within their sphere of activity and lead by example. Require reporting Supervisors to demonstrate effective control over health, safety and environmental responsibilities
  • Meet or exceed company and regulatory requirements and strive for continuous improvement. Ensure implementation of strategies through Performance and Results program.
  • Ensure that a chain of command exists whereby responsibility and authority for safety matters are clearly determined, documented and understood
  • Make arrangements for the necessary training, including induction training, of all personnel under their control in the safe working procedures relevant to their activities. Ensure that all staff under their control are adequately qualified and experienced for the jobs they undertake
  • Include health and safety objectives in job appraisal systems within their area of responsibility
  • Ensure arrangements are in place for the co-ordination and control of Sub-Contractor activities
  • Provide working conditions, which are justified as maintaining acceptable levels of safety and a healthy environment for all operations. Ensure all relevant workplace safety inspections etc take place
  • Ensure that the relevant risk assessments are undertaken and reviewed. Ensure and maintain all safeguards and controls as required by the Safe System of Work / Risk Assessment
  • Ensure that there is adequate provision and necessary allocation of time for Health, Safety and Environmental management.
  • Communicate HSE Policy and Processes to supervisors and staff. Maintain effective consultation in respect of Health, Safety and Environmental management. Include Health, Safety and Environment as an agenda item in all meetings. Attend HSE meetings
  • Take action in accordance with the Company disciplinary procedures for those who are negligent in failing to follow established safety and environmental procedures or misuse equipment provided for their health and safety

Candidate profile

  • Knowledge of the technical lay out of the STG DP 3 fleet
  • Strategic mind-set balancing short term needs with long term strategic goals
  • Pleasant disposition with the capability to be authoritative when necessary
  • Clear and effective oral and written communication skills in English language
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of principle discipline and peripheral subjects
  • Strong co-ordination, organisation and liaison skills with the ability to seek and gain consensus solutions to complex issues
  • Prepared to travel and work irregular hours

Experience and Education

  • Technical education (Naval Architect, Licensed Chief Engineer or equivalent)
  • Management skills training
  • Experience in similar position
  • Experience on DP3 vessels, perferrably with similar DP systems
