The organisation

Our client is a ISO 9001 certified leading producer of polymer emulsions and synthetic thickeners. Based in Eastern Europe they produce polymer emulsions to serve the following industries:

  • Paint & Coatings.
  • Pressure sensitive adhesives for BOPP tapes & labels.
  • Construction chemicals.
  • Textile Industry.
  • Paper and carpet industries.
  • Non-woven industry.

The position

With expansion of their business and innovation in mind, our client has decided to invest in a new production site that will be situated in the Rotterdam area in The Netherlands. The project is a greenfield project that will be executed in close collaboration with different stakeholders such as an engineering and construction firm and local government bodies. To make sure that all their interests are served our client is looking to hire a Project Director whom will work together with the stakeholders and provide key knowledge and details regarding the layout and setup of the production facility. 

Tasks & responsibilities

The main responsibilities are:

  • Ensures policies and procedures are implemented to promote safety beliefs and advance safety as a core value.  Ensures that adequate initiatives are in place to deal properly with emergencies. Ensure that all incidents are reported and appropriately investigated and corrective actions implemented. Demonstrate commitment to all loss control matters through high visibility and actions. Ensures that training is conducted, procedures are followed and records kept as required to ensure full compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Ensures that safe operating procedures and practices are in place and followed.  Ensures that mechanical integrity of all plants is maintained to allow safe and efficient operations.  Ensures that plant produce at volumes to meet demand requirements set forth by planning.
  • Facilitates reliability improvement process to maximize unit outputs and minimize operating costs.  Ensures that maintenance work is completed in a safe, efficient, and cost effective manner.  Oversees capital use to provide increase asset value, maintain infrastructure and meet business needs.
  • Ensures that employee activities related to hiring, promotion, layoff, salary, etc. are handled professionally and plant environment is ideal to foster personnel development and growth.
  • Has to be updated on the relevant technologies in the chemical field and continuously strive to have the plant to become more cost effective by means of technology and process automation systems.
  • Directs the activities of each department through supervisors, who are responsible to produce effective results within their areas of responsibilities to ensure optimum product availability and line efficiency.
  • Conducts staff meetings to learn and solve problems, to listen to suggestions for improvement and to establish goals.
  • Participates in local Plant Managers' meetings and attends community activities to enhance Company image in area.
  • Approves daily, monthly, and annual reports and bid comparisons, status changes of employees, and process change in technical improvements.

Candidate profile

  • BSc/MSc degree in a technical field, e.g. Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.
  • Experience as a Plant Leader of a continuous process plant where water based polymer emulsions and redispersible powders, preferably containing ethylene, were produced.
  • Experience with greenfield projects is a plus.
  • Leadership experience in specialty chemicals is required as well as a background in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Willing to travel to the head office in Eastern Europe to assist with projects when needed.
  • Self-motivated, capable decision-maker that is able to effectively influence others.
  • Industrial SHE and regulatory knowledge and experience.
  • Strong command of English. Dutch is beneficial.
