The position

The CFO is responsible for managing a centrally controlled organization. He/She will operate in a multi-cultural industrial environment and has to create a smooth, reliable and a profitable operation. It is expected that the CFO ensures that the reports are reliable and with a high degree of accuracy.

As a strong business partner of the CEO and the Management Team, the CFO should actively contribute to the development of the company towards set targets by challenge, monitor and analyze the business from both a strategic and an operational perspective.

The CFO will be part of the management team and reports directly to the CEO. IT, HR and controlling will be reporting to the CFO, whereas the COO leads domestic and international operations. The CFO will be responsible for financial stability, international expansion and is accountable for a transparent report of cashflows.

The company is listed currently on the Toronto Stock Exchange and may seek further listings. Investor relations will also be an important task for the CFO together with the CEO and Chairman.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Strategic business partner of the CEO and Board (future planning, supporting growth and improving business performance);
  • Managing Finance, IT and HR;
  • Manage the entire planning, forecasting and reporting process for the organization including preparation of the monthly management report;
  • Manage and oversee the entire budgeting process for the organisation;
  • Develop, maintain and optimize controlling tools for cost accounting, sales controlling, production controlling, capex controlling, variance analysis and ad hoc analyses;
  • Act as a trusted business advisor for the management team and push this culture to the Finance, IT and HR departments;
  • Leading investment management and business development plans;
  • Stakeholder management towards shareholders; as well as the stock exchange
  • Co-leading the internal organization;
  • Process- and cost-optimizing; improving processes and cost reduction;
  • Risk management and compliance;
  • Performance management of products and departments (e.g. Balanced Scorecard);
  • Shaping internal and external communication reports concerning the financial situations of the organization.

Candidate profile

Given the character of the role, it is essential that the CFO combines thorough financial management experience with a commercial focus and international exposure. A successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commercial understanding and business acumen, which he/she will have gained from working successfully within or in close cooperation with sales and marketing functions of a business, preferably in the food, retail or agri business. 
The ideal candidate is energetic, result driven and has a passion to excel. He or she is highly analytical, and at the same time demonstrates empathy for others, using strong interpersonal skills. And has prior experience with listed companies challenges working with professional investors and stock exchange requirements.

  • University level educated preferably a Master degree in finance, accounting or related subjects;
  • Extensive experience in a similar function in the food/retail/agri industry;
  • Work experience in a stock enlisted company;
  • 10-15 years’ experience in financial controlling and business controlling;
  • Experience in an international context (preferably Latin-America or Africa);
  • Knowledge of and work experience in a start-up business environment;
  • Familiar with and has worked for a fast growing organization;
  • Capable of working and acting on different organization levels;
  • Initiator and finisher. A hands-on, flexible working attitude, strategically underlined and positions him or herself as a partner in the business;
  • Structured professional; seasoned in writing reports and presentations;
  • Fluent in Dutch and English; preferably also Spanish;
  • Mobile and open to travel;
  • Preferably starts before the 1st of September (starting for 2 days a week is negotiable).
