The organisation

With more than 57,000 employees, the bank offers retail and commercial banking services to thirty-eight million customers in over forty countries.   A unique aspect of ING’s way of working is that they embrace the fact that banking is changing. Customer expectations are changing, shaped by their experiences online and on their smartphones: personal, instant, relevant, and seamless. While more traditional players in the financial domain may experience this as a threat, for ING, it’s an opportunity. They run a wide range of innovation initiatives and are closely involved with fintech start-ups disrupting the market using new technologies like blockchain, robotics and artificial intelligence. ING bank in The Netherlands (ING bank NL) has as its vision “sustainable progress for all”, focused on providing seamless digital services and a superior customer service, while assuring safety and compliance. ING bank NL is continuously changing to achieve this, using an agile way-of-working.

The position

ING is a global financial institution that embraces change. The Change Portfolio Manager bridges the gap between strategy and delivery by providing ING Bank NL’s MT progress insights for all change projects in the COO & CRO domains. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced management consultant to enter a global bank at the highest levels and work at the forefront of the rapidly-changing banking sector.

Tasks & responsibilities

To be able to steer and coordinate the whole change portfolio, ING bank NL has a small and senior team of three change portfolio managers. The change portfolio managers are crucial in providing insights to ING Bank NL’s management team, bridging the gap between strategy and delivery. The change portfolio team is part of the Global Transformation Experts (GTE) organization, which is ING’s central hub for consultants, change experts and process experts.

This senior portfolio manager has great exposure to the bank’s C-level management and the opportunity to impact the progress of the change agenda.” – Bastiaan de Ruiter, Head of Global Transformation Experts

Each change portfolio manager supports one or two of ING Bank NL’s Executive Committee members and their respective leadership team. The new Change Portfolio Manager is responsible for the portfolios of operations and risk. Interesting current priorities include technical, data-driven projects about regulatory requirements (eg. credit model implementation), and projects on operational efficiencies and process digitization across the bank.  The Change Portfolio Manager is generally involved in topics of strategic budget allocation, prioritization of changes through the quarterly business review process, milestone tracking, and the resolution of obstacles. This requires strong analytics and consulting skills, as well as experience in program management and reporting. Also, experience with backlog management and an agile way-of-working is important. The new Change Portfolio Manager is always one step ahead and knows how to get things done, while having a natural eagerness to motivate others in achieving their goals and milestones.   The role offers exposure to ING at the highest levels and provides direct insights into the bank’s operations and risk environments.
