Top of Minds for Stolt-Nielsen

The organisation

With its combined proposition of tankers (deep-sea, coastal and barge ships), terminals (in ports) and containers (depots and trucks), Stolt-Nielsen provides its customers with door-to-door logistics solutions for bulk liquid chemicals and food-grade products.

With 165 ships across Europe, Asia, and Americas, Stolt Tankers has the largest fleet in the world. Its 70 deep-sea ships operate on an integrated network with various coastal, regional, and inland barging ships around the world. Moreover, the company has a natural commitment to sustainability, and aims for Stolt Tankers to be 100% carbon neutral by 2050.

“Every Stolt-Nielsen employee – in every role, across every business – plays an important role in helping us achieve our purpose, lead in our markets, seek new opportunities and perform at our best, every day.”

The position

Stolt-Nielsen is a leading group of businesses that offer bulk-liquid and chemical logistics as well as innovative land-based aquaculture globally. The Purchasing Manager is responsible for the Stolt Tankers procurement team, activities, and process improvements. This is an excellent opportunity for a procurement manager with vast international experience to have an impact on the company’s procurement processes and successes in the years to come.

The Purchasing Manager is part of the Stolt Tankers business and leads a team of 12 Sourcing and Logistics Coordinators (SLCs) globally: two in Singapore, two in Houston (United States), two in Manila (Philippines), and six in Rotterdam (The Netherlands). This team is responsible for the procurement of everything on the ships including food, machinery, tools, and crew supplies. This means that stakeholders are the ships – chief engineers, captains, superintendents – which requires intensive contact on operational purchasing matters, e.g. to align priorities, coordinate logistics, and discuss last minute changes.

The Purchasing Manager reports to the Head of Global Procurement & Logistics.

Tasks & responsibilities

The environment is very dynamic, and the role requires quick switching between in-the-moment details and the big picture. Moreover, given the diversity in the team of Sourcing and Logistics Coordinators in terms of culture, capabilities, and career stages, the Purchasing Manager needs to have adaptive management skills and the ability to appreciate and inspire the team across the board. The Purchasing Manager also identifies operational process improvements and opportunities for procurement innovation, such as more (cost) efficient and effective order delivery. In addition, the role contributes to vendor management activities, including audits and performance review.

The Purchasing Manager builds respectful relationships with the people in procurement and logistics, and has a key focus on the SLC team’s personal development” – Lynnda Pekel, Global Head of Procurement & Logistics

The role is based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and involves some travel. For example, the Purchasing Manager visits colleagues in the Singapore, Manila, and Houston offices at least once a year.

Candidate profile

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Business Administration or Engineering, complemented by NEVI 1/2 or equivalent
  • 10+ years’ experience in an international environment
  • Purchasing and logistics experience, preferably in a maritime environment
  • Excellent contracting- and negotiation skills
  • Strong communication skills across culture and hierarchy; English oral, written and presentation skills
