Our client is a leading European Investment Bank, focussing on financing, risk management and trading solutions.

The position

Robert Walters has been asked to recruit a Director Legal for a leading European Investment bank.

Due to Brexit and changes in the European market, the Director Legal will have the important and challenging task to be the trusted advisor for the CEO, Board and International General Counsel.

For the European Headquarters, based in Amsterdam, we are looking for a Director Legal.

Tasks and responsibilities 

• To provide strategic legal advice to the Managing Board, CEO and Global General Counsel.
• Key relationships / stakeholders are CEO, Managing Board, Head of Corporate Governance & Regulatory Affairs, Head of Compliance & Conduct, Heads of product desks in Amsterdam and branch offices.
• To work closely with the international legal teams to facilitate the delivery of appropriate legal advice and transaction and documentation support (internal and external) to the company and ensure legal risk is managed appropriately.
• To deliver the legal strategy for the company, working with stakeholders and legal colleagues to ensure the timely, effective and efficient delivery of all issues, projects and initiatives.
• To oversee major transactional matters, contentious matters, investigations and corporate activity and, where necessary, assisting with communications with all relevant regulators, and providing related legal advice to the company.
• Risk & Control: comply with Code and policies, deliver all relevant statutory, regulatory, supervisory and legal obligations.
• To manage and deliver the communication of internal and external legal advice and input on transactions and projects to stakeholders in a commercial, user friendly and efficient manner.

Candidate Profile 

• Our client is located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and the role requires residency in the Netherlands.
• The Director Legal will travel abroad frequently.
• Fluency in Dutch and English (written and oral), French is a big plus.
• Legal professional with a background in Banking/ Finance, preferably within a large lawfirm. Dutch legal qualification preferred.
• Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to become a trusted adviser to senior executives.
• Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills across all levels of a complex organisation.
• Ability to recognise issues of strategic, legal or reputational importance.
• Ability to keep up to date with and share relevant legal and market developments.
• In-depth knowledge of general banking law and practice and the financial services industry.
