The organisation

AkzoNobel creates everyday essentials to make people’s lives more liveable and inspiring. As a leading global paints and coatings company and a major producer of specialty chemicals, we supply essential ingredients, essential protection and essential color to industries and consumers worldwide. Backed by a pioneering heritage, our innovative products and sustainable technologies are designed to meet the growing demands of our fast-changing planet, while making life easier.

Headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, we have approximately 45,000 people in around 80 countries, while our portfolio includes well-known brands such as Flexa, Sikkens, Alabastine and Jozo. Consistently ranked as a leader in sustainability, we are dedicated to energizing cities and communities while creating a protected, colorful world where life is improved by what we do.

The position

As a major international organization we operate a sophisticated Corporate Strategy and M&A department. Within this context, your mission in this role is to support the AkzoNobel businesses worldwide (Decorative Paints, Performance Coatings, and Specialty Chemicals) by managing and executing acquisitions, joint ventures and divestment projects from start to finish. The value of these Mergers & Acquisitions projects ranges from small to several billion euros (enterprise value).

Is this a challenge that matches your skills and ambitions as a deeply analytical professional with strong business instincts? Have you gained operational experience in terms of successfully negotiating and closing at least three to five transactions including due diligence, negotiation, and overall project management? Above all, do you have what it takes to make a real difference within our dynamic, multinational and multicultural business environment?

If you offer all this and more we invite you to apply for the role of Project Director M&A.

Tasks & responsibilities

This role is based at the AkzoNobel Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, although you do not need to speak Dutch. At all times you seek to deliver value adding and successful transactions in alignment with a Steering Committee, and you support M&A team members.

Thus you manage cross-functional project teams with a wide range of colleagues from business units and corporate entities, as well as external advisors such as transaction support specialists, financial advisors, accountancy firms and legal firms. In doing so you ensure that AkzoNobel internal processes, procedures and governance are adhered to, and you ensure that due diligence is effectively completed and thoroughly analyzed via the highest standards of financial analysis.

This requires you to review valuation and valuation modelling in detail, negotiate high-quality transactions with other parties and their advisors, and oversee the disentanglement process for divestment projects.

At all times you support the Director M&A on tracking ongoing projects and assist with team/departmental organization. Further, you support the business with approval requests.

It is important that you are able to act as an inspirational figure who can motivate colleagues to ‘go beyond’ their normal, day-to-day activities.

Candidate profile

  • Master degree in a financial and/or legal discipline
  • At least 5 years of experience of independently managing M&A projects
  • Experience in an international organization
  • Project management skills and solid experience in the field of valuation, legal review and negotiations
  • Fluent written and spoken English
