The position

This position is placed within the Laboratory Equipment Division. The future incumbent of this role will be responsible for the R&D-activities of the following sites: Osterode as Center of Excellence for Centrifugation with satellite site in Santa Clara (California), Langenselbold as CoE for CO2-incubators and Constant Temperature equipment and Niederelbert as CoE for Water Purification. These CoEs are working together with our R&C site in Hyderabad in India, whose activities are to be coordinated with the CoEs in Germany and the Indian sub-contractors as well.

As we are driving continuous improvement in our company the improvement of the R&D processes will be a task of high importance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Achieve world-class R&D capabilities by being a change agent to improve R&D processes, to upgrade the skills of the team through coaching/recruiting and to introduce world-class R&D practices 
  • Improve key processes including; reducing time-to-market, improving design for manufacturability, improving design for quality, and driving down cost to manufacture while maintaining innovation in increasingly commoditized markets
  • Develop R&D capabilities to support manufacture of selected products in North America, Europe, and Asia 
  • Work effectively in a matrix management organizational structure, particularly with Product Management, Manufacturing and Sourcing functions 
  • Implement process changes to minimize maintenance engineering investment
  • Provide leadership to develop designs that can be effectively manufactured and maintained at multiple sites 
  • Responsibility to lead the non major platform NPI (new product introduction) projects in their CoE sites of responsibility
  • Implement metrics to measure progress toward achieving world-class capabilities
  • Manage teams and R&D projects across multiple sites globally
  • Implement performance management and talent development processes for R&D personnel

Candidate Profile

  • BS degree in Engineering or related discipline (i.e. physics, mathematics) or equivalent experience, advanced degree (e.g. MS, PhD or MBA) preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of R&D leadership experience
  • Proven ability to drive measurable R&D excellence, responsible to work within a target budget and with given resources
  • Significant experience with world-class R&D processes gained from working for a company that has achieved excellence in R&D
  • Global experience preferred with demonstrated ability to manage multiple-site R&D teams, projects and budgets.
  • Proven ability to drive effective performance management
  • Experience in capital equipment industries with relatively low unit volumes/high product mix (e.g. power equipment, automation equipment, life sciences/lab equipment, medical equipment) preferred
  • Outstanding leadership ability and significant drive
  • Fluent (spoken & written) in English and German
  • Demonstrated ability to lead effectively across functions
  • Effective communication skills
  • Process improvement experience a plus
  • Flexibility to travel up to 50% of time with some International travel
